How to Use Gumtree

Gumtree is a British based free online community and classified website.  You can buy and sell a range of goods and services, as well as advertise community events and training courses.  The most popular advert classifications on Gumtree are property, cars, jobs and the buying and selling of second hand goods.

Buying on Gumtree

There are two ways to carry out a search on Gumtree for the web.  Firstly, you can search for a specific item by entering it in the main search box.  To narrow this search down it is a good idea to enter a local town or home postcode.  Alternatively, you can choose one of the most popular categories from the selection shown below the search bar.  Choosing the second option will bring up another list to help you to narrow your search down a bit more.  Both of these search options are useful because you might know exactly what you want or you might have some vague idea.

When you have found what you are looking for, all you need to do is to click on the advert text and this will take you to a new page where you can read a more in depth description of the item as well as ways to contact the seller.

If you opt to phone or text the seller then you are responsible for the fact that you have given your personal contact details.  However, if you email the seller then Gumtree will automatically assign you and the seller an encrypted emails for you to communicate with.

Selling on Gumtree

Selling goods or services on Gumtree from the web is a very straight forward process, with step by step instructions.  To start with, all you need to do is to select the 'Post an Ad' button in the top right hand of the screen – this button is always visible, so you won't lose it and you can't miss it.

You will then be taken to a screen that asks you to log in if you are an existing user or to create an account if you are new.  Once this step has been achieved and your email has been verified, you can start to list your items for sale.  As with the search function, the web based version of Gumtree offers you two options;

1) Type in the specific item that you want to list for sale.  This will then bring up a list below so that you can select which category you want it to be placed in – this will help buyers to find your item easily.  Once you have selected one of these options, you will then be asked for your home post code so that Gumtree buyers can find you in their local area.

2) Browse by category, this option is useful if you are selling a lot of items that you want to list together as one job lot.  Again, once you choose this option, you will be offered additional choices to select to help buyers to find your goods.
